|
Spectacular morning – moon set . . . |
. . . and sun rise |
Ronzo reports . . . . It was an awesome day weatherwise. A crisp 11 degrees welcomed the six starters and we were glad of the sea breeze with four holes to go.
Chris, Squancey and Scobes were out of the blocks first. Squancey had a ball burster – 43 pts. With 24 on the front and 19 on the back, no phone calls were going to put him off. Seven pars and four bogeys tell the story.
Chris also had an amazing run, with four pars and 12 bogeys. Amazingly he faltered on two of the par threes.
Scobes wasn’t far from his handicap with 32, with two pars and three bogeys … been great to have him back mixing it with the rest of us this season.
Walks and Ron took to the course in a four wheel jalopy, while Sir Robin took the “shanks pony” option. Ron continued his new found form, but only managed one par and seven bogeys.
Walks could have scooped the pool if he didn’t persistently “top” the ball. His two pars and five bogeys helped him along to 34.
Bin’s highlight, besides the company, was coffee at half time. His one par and eight bogeys lifted him to 33.

NOT THE BURSWOOD TROPHY
Ronzo reports . . . .
|
Giant air swing! |
The drive behind us, an “elite group” of six were bursting with confidence after the games last week at the Mandurah Masters. On alighting from our cars, a chilly 13 degrees, accompanied by a howling gale greeted us. The wind hardly eased all day.
Squancey, Bin and Ron followed Chris, Macca and Walks.
|
|
Laying up (wisely) |
Straight at it (Signature par 3) |
Squancey was out of the blocks brilliantly, with 13 after five holes, turned with 20 and it seemed all over. He started the back nine with four for three and it did seem all over. The phone then started ringing and that was that.
Dalbs was consistent with 10 on each nine and ended up “holding up” the rest of us or bottom of the ladder. His par 4 on the second looked promising. I’m sure leaving his hat hanging behind the loo door meant he couldn’t keep a lid on things.
Ronzo was not spectacular anywhere, managed only one par and said he was the “best of the worst”. Squancey said his plan worked … avoiding having to write the report.
|
|
|
Today's champ was striking some accurate fairway irons |
Off in style (but wiped the hole!) |
Chris was surprised by not making the podium after shooting four pars. He didn’t enjoy the greens on the first nine, but reckoned the back nine was “pretty good” … with three pars and two bogeys we can understand why.
Walks’ words were … “I played a pretty ordinary round today”. He also said he was thankful for Bin’s effort, enabling Walks to avoid the NAGA. One par was his highlight.
Macca wiped the first, obviously shaken by having to negotiate past Ron on the way to Araluen … Macca’s story was “Ron stopped in the middle of the road to take a picture of the sunrise”. From then on Macca scored on all but the 17th hole to again make the podium.
Squancey couldn’t stay for lunch, but discussion between the rest of the “elite group” indicated that Araluen is a worthy fixture in our golfing calendar.

Hamersley, Stableford
Dalbs reports . . . . It was a "jacket on?" or "jacket off?" type of morning for 6 keen golfers teeing up for the final Hamersley fixture for 2023-24. Plenty of comments about the extra sleep-in with a 6.20 tee off. And Walks couldn't repeat the masterly ball toss result achieved last week. One notable absentee was the Pres who was left in the dark courtesy of a pole top fire that knocked out power supply to the area from Monday a.m. until Tuesday around 4.00 pm. GS, GM and RD (what a team!) led off, their rear being protected by CJ, BP and GW.
Drives down the middle, some steamers off the fairway and chips and pitch shots that made it close to the pin. What was going on? One of golf's eternal mysteries but Dalbs lapped it up apart from a couple of hiccup holes toward the end and some gettable putts that weren't got.
|
|
|
|
Squancey was mixing them up, cracking good drives and fairway shots interspersed with quite a few cursory exchanges and short or wide putts. Just when we thought he'd return a handicap enhancing score, he'd squared the card, pocketed 2 pars and graced the podium. |
Macca wasn't as fortunate, his less desirable green-to-tee shots outnumbering some really great shots and he, too, had his moments with the putter. |
The short stick was proving costly on greens that were somewhat hard and proving difficult to stop the ball on from fairway approaches. And it wasn't any different for the second group . . .
. . . who were led by the rejuvenated Pinky treating himself to 5 bogeys at 3 pts apiece. He was looking at a sizeable score but a few errant shots and, most disappointingly and frustratingly, too many putts on a number of greens (the putting woes obviously not confined to the first group) thwarting his ambitions.
|
|
|
|
Another great fairway shot . . . |
. . . but the putt just missed |
Uh oh . . . bush bound . . . |
. . . but a good out |
|
Jacko's 16th LD win - easily the highest ever achieved, the next highest by GW (11) in 2019-20 |
Both Walks and Chris thought they were in for a good day, both notching pars for 3 points on the 10th. Walks' rampage continued with two bogies, but then came unlucky number 13. It was a bit hit and miss from then on with 3 wipes and one 4-pointer! Giddy stuff. Chris's normal heroics suddenly went missing today, a series of doubles and one triple interspersed with a par and a bogey not the style this golfing dynamo is renowned for with 6 of his12 points coming from 2 holes.
No Vikki to organise our afters nor sweeteners to munch on but the entertaining conversation was a great way to farewell Hamersley for another "interesting" season of makeshift "clubhouse" arrangements. Looking forward to stepping into the new pavilion next season.

First (at something!) |
Litts reports . . . It was fine cool weather with a little bit of a breeze. It was almost perfect conditions for golf. Your reporter hasn’t been at the course for a while and noticed quite a difference in the HGC building work. A lot has been done in the past six weeks particularly on the steel work for the main building and the development of the driving range.
Walks started club proceedings with the obligatory ball toss and it was one to be marvelled at. Six balls for six players fell into two very clear groups of three balls each. A masterly performance.
It came to tee off time and a change noted was that we were the second club/group off the tenth tee. Has there been a changing of the guard? For us, the first group was GS, RD and GL. The second group was RA, CJ and GW.

Birdie putt coming up |
Excited to see us |
Oops . . . headed left |
The Little One had missed quite a few weeks so played conservatively. He had a good day with steady if unspectacular golf. Dainty was mentioned. Squancy did not have his best day with a wipe on the 11th but finished with a well-crafted bogey on the last hole to give him a valuable three pointer. Dalbs unfortunately had a bad start as he just could not get the ball down the fairway and he had just one point after the first two holes. Things got better after that but a little too late to avoid the NAGA unfortunately.

|
Back to the correct hole (hopefully) |
Jacko had a really good round off his nine handicap and would have won on any other day. It was steady golf all day with four pars and four bogies and he capped it off with another long drive. He also improved his eclectic by parring the 13th and thereby removing his last bogey. He deserved his place on the podium. Walks appeared to have a steady round, spoiled a little by a triple on the last. But he had a good solid 18 points that also got him a place on the podium. Ron was a little lonely on the cart but played some good golf, except for a couple of wipes, and continued a trend back to consistent golf in recent weeks.
The morning finished with the presentations and the usual vittles supplied by the Allardices.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Round 2
Macca suggested at the 10th tee that it was the ideal opportunity for the (only) four other players to allow him his maiden win for the season. Jacko, Squancey, Ronzo and Walks proceeded to give Macca his wish. Here's how they did it:
|
Perfect morning for a stroll |
Just five players made themselves available for day 2 of our fabled Club Championship. An attempt to play as a fivesome was thwarted by a group following. Walks, Ronzo and Macca teed off first, leaving Squancey and Jacko to follow as a duo.
For the first group the 10th hole was conclusive with Macca parring, Ronzo a double bogey and Walks losing a ball, that should have been found, for a triple. There were the full range of good drives and poor, some reasonable putting, but no one was consistent. Ron had a par on the 12th and Walks on the 16th but there was little else of note. In the end the handicaps were prominent in determining order - gross scores were Walks on 50, Ronzo and Macca on 52.
|
|
We have ignition |
Fire One |
The low- handicappers on the second group performed better with Squancey parring the 10th and 12th and Jacko parring the 12th and chipping in on the 15th from 21 metres for his season-leading fourth birdie! Squancey was not heard by the first group (as they were a long way behind) and Jacko's putting was what let his score down. Their gross scores were 48 and 47 respectively.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Round 1
Squancey and Dalbs report . . . . . The first of the later starts saw cool, perfect weather ushering in the double – 2024 Club Championship and the Match Play Final. Was it nerves or nature, but Dalbs did make it back to the 1st tee in time.
|
|
Heading left at the 3rd |
Don't remember being in the rough. It was all a blur! |
MATCH PLAY FINAL:
Brian has been on a roll and there was only the slight shadow of the Thin Man standing in the way of his second MP trophy. But after Dalbs's steady play and Pinky's initial putting woes, Dalbs was 2-up after the first 2 holes and the crowd of four sensed an upset. Pinky's third shot at the 3rd veered off course into left rough about 80m out but his shot out of trouble to the green was a bewdy for 2 putts and a 6, tying with Dalbs but winning the hole with handicap advantage to peg one back. Both went stroke for stroke until the 5th where a Dalbs 3-putt evened up the match. Life for the combatants on the 6th was scattered with misfires, tying the hole each with 8 shots but Pinky going 1-up on handicap. Though Dalbs showed a glimpse of return to form with a par to Pinky's 4 at the par 3 7th, the hole was squared on handicap. Brian was striking the ball well and his par at the 8th from a terrific long putt that he lagged up quite close was too much for the Thin Man and his wobbly putter and Pinky was home in a great "come-from-behind" Match Play win and a competitive Championship score that, unfortunately, he is unable to take advantage of due to travel plans.
Squancey
Played a solid game parring both par 3 holes and playing to handicap on all other holes with the exception of the 6th hole where he zig zagged across the fairway ultimately losing his ball. A brilliant 6 iron shot from 140 meters out reduced the damage. A fluffy 8 iron shot from 110 meters on the 9th was the only other blemish resulting in a double bogey .
Chris
Back to his steady best with a blistering run of scores of '5' on 6 holes. A lost ball on the 9th resulted in his only double. Promoted in the Championship pecking order with Pinky away for the closing round.
Walks
Plenty of lusty hitting both off the tees and the fairways and judged some good long putts. Chipping and pitching let him down on a few occasions, the most costly being at the 9th, taking 3 shots to move the ball 40m onto the green for a very long putt and finishing with an 8!
Ronzo
Ronzo had a horrid start playing most of his shots on the 1st hole down the 6th fairway. 9 strokes on the first hole would be a mountain to climb to recover. It was a slippery slide for the next 2 holes, blowing out any chances to recover and post a good score. On the 4th hole, he hit one of those old Ronzo drives, but he could not capitalise on it, as he followed it up with some wayward fairway shots. Ronzo was hoping that we would all score a 4 on the par 3, 5th, but Squancey put away a 6 foot putt to par the hole and upset Ronzo. Ronzo was much happier on the next par 3 where scores of 3, 4 and 5 were achieved between the 3 players.
Macca
Well it looked like Macca was going to follow Ronzo's lead with a horrid drive off the 1st. As luck would have it, his ball ended back on the fairway. He recovered with a couple of good shots landing just off the green. His next shot put the ball close to the hole sinking the putt for a respectable 5. Squancey's ex-driver was not working for Macca who, I think, lost 3 balls due to wayward drives. Scores of 3 sevens, an eight and a nine weren't helping his cause. A day to forget.
But who could forget what followed . . . Ronzo's orgasm slice!!

Hamersley, Stableford
The Karrinyup Kids (one Ex Officio) report . . . . . The early arrivals bedecked in just the club shirt soon had a vest or long sleeve top on as a cool breeze from the East chilled the bones. Nice feeling, particularly looking at the coming heat wave conditions. Seven starters with Pinky and Jacko tussling for a place in the Match Play Final. Ronzo and Dalbs shared the cart, hatching a scheme to steal the round from the other unsuspecting hopefuls.
|
The camera never lies |
The three G's led the way and an opening Par and 3 points by last week's inferno looked ominous, but the blaze was quickly snuffed out by a series of doubles and wipes. Squancey's wipe at the first set the tone also for doubles and wipes. Both managed just a few of their usual accurate and consistent drives. This led to Squancey's sonorous tones echoing around the course and Walks's odd laconic grunt. Stableford scores of 10, each with a handicap of 11, were matched by Graeme's score of 17 with an 18 handicap. Not their best games! Macca's occasional good drives tended to be followed by poor second shots and he spent a lot of time among the trees. Saved his best for four holes over which he accumulated 13 valuable points. While the Grahams fought for NAGA honours, won by Walks on countback, Macca's max. handicap carried him to a third on the podium.
Match Play
Pinky, fresh from last week's MP win and Chris, freshened by salty air, were straight into it – both scoring par but Pinky's extra stroke sent him 1-up. The signs appeared good, until Chris squared it up with an 8 strokes to 10 win on the 11th!! After squaring the par 3 3rd, Chris could manage a win on only one hole (a Pinky wipe). His timing with the driver and fairway irons uncharacteristically fell away somewhat as the round progressed, making the task of fending off Pinky's extra handicap strokes a bridge too far. Pinky was also having his struggles and though the best both could manage over the closing 3 holes were doubles, that extra stroke per hole was gold. Jacko's missed putt from a short distance at the 18th (which would've squared the hole) seemed a metaphor for his day (See what happens when you travel by ship. Throws you off balance!). Brian won the Match Play 2-up.

Well out of trouble |
WHAT! I didn't aim that way |
That missed short putt |
|
|
Early troubles at the 13th , but he came good as the round progressed |
The Carters zoomed over the 10th pocketing 3 points each. Dalbs was the only scorer on the 11th after all four tee shots went nursery or bush. From then on, he went strangely gangbusters settling for a par and 5 bogey's punctuated by a 4-putt 13th. His pitching and chipping was totally out of character but contributed to his first season win. Ronzo was engineering his own Resurrection Shuffle, managing 1 pt over the next 2 holes before some cracking shots over the next 5 holes earned three
3-pointers interspersed with some "shockers" and an AAAARRRRGGGHHH or two. But he'd played to handicap and the scheme hatched in the shared cart was realised – filling 1st and 2nd placings.
Mrs Ronzo's after-round Hedgehogs went down a treat.

Hamersley, Stableford
Walks reports . . . . 6 players only and the weather was perfect . . . again.
Match Play: Pinky and Scobes
|
|
On recent form, Scobes went into the contest as likely favourite. However, Pinky found his A game on the day and jumped to an early lead (3 up after 4 holes). Scobes won the 6th hole but was unable to catch up. The end result was a 2 and 1 win to Pinky. |
Stableford Comp
Ronzo struggled from the outset. He only had 3 points from the first 5 holes. He improved after that but the end result was 11 points. He was NAGA on the day.
Scobes started with a 3 pointer bogey but then faltered, scoring only 3 points over the next 4 holes. He then settled down and scored 9 points over the last 4 holes for an overall score of 15 points.
Macca mis-hit several shots on the day but he played some great approaches to greens, leaving 3 shots to the green within gimme range. He had no wipes and finished the round with two 3 pointers. Finished on 18 points.
Squancey made a fast start with 2 pars after 3 holes. And his game remained steady throughout to end up in third place on 20 points.
|
|
Distraction from the action |
Lets see how it's done |
Pinky bounced back from a poor game last week to play a great round. Two pars on the 12th and 13th holes and a consistent game with no wipes made for a round of 22 points, and second place.
And the winner on the day was Walks. Followed on from his win at Joondalup with another consistent round. Got better later in the round scoring 14 points over the last 4 holes. That was three 3 pointers and a magical 5 pointer birdie on the 17th hole. 5 pointers are as rare as hens’ teeth but Walks pulled one off with a putt of 5 metres from off the green. Finished with 23 points.

JOONDALUP CLASSIC
Walks reports . . . . As always, It was a great experience to play Joondalup. Weather was also perfect. Only six Players were available on the day. Jacko, Pinky and Macca led off followed by Squancey, Dalbs and Walks.
Pinky was NAGA on the day with a score of 22 points. He summed up his own round as ‘absolutely bloody awful’. He had no pars and 5 wipes.
|
|
|
We're off, Brian splitting the middle - but it didn't last! |
A classic feature of the Quarry course –
Quarry 5th hole |
Squancey running cold with sand difficulties |
Jacko’s game was not up to its usual standard. He only managed two pars on the day. He did however maintain his consistency and only had one wipe. Finished up with 27 points.
Squancey’s game was hot and cold. He started with a 4 pointer par but followed on with a couple of wipes, then another par. He played quite a few poor fairway shots but often made good recovery shots. He had 4 pars all up, as well as 4 wipes. Finished up with 29 points.
Classic Joondalup Holes (revisited) |

|
Quarry 2nd - Par 4 350m |
Quarry 3rd - Par 3 123m, with Walks on his way to one of those monster putts |
Quarry 4th - Par 5 474m |
And on the podium:
Macca finished third with 31 points. He had a steady 18 points on the front 9 but had a slump on the back 9 where he only scored 2 points in a section of 4 holes.
Dalbs finished second with 32 points. He had 2 four pointer pars but this was offset by 3 wipes.

Not all clear sailing |
Not a golfer . . but he's got balls! |
And the winner on the day was Walks. His game was on-song from the start with 5 bogeys for the first 5 holes and then a 4 point birdie on the seventh hole. He had 24 points on the front nine. On the back nine his good form continued with 2 more 4 point birdies for 19 points and a grand total of 43 points.
All 3 birdie putts were dropped in the hole from more than 10 metres out. Three birdies in one round is quite an inexplicable performance, seeing he hasn’t had a birdie on the back nine at Hamersley in the last 5 years.

Hamersley, Stroke
GOLDEN PUTTER – Round 2
|
Ronzo attracts an audience |
Second round of the Golden Putter and another stroke round on the GBWGC’s home turf, the back nine at Hamersley. It was a tough day for the PFL, embroiled in controversy at both ends of the game, but with the wisdom of Solomon and an iron fist in a velvet glove, he made his rulings on
- An appeal by a senior member to hold handicaps steady over the GP – the stroke events were deemed separate so the baby was cut in half and treated as two separate portions
- A retrospective adjustment to the final positions (more on that later)
The first group out was Ronzo, Dalbs and Jacko, obviously the popular group because first Squancey at sixteen and then Pinky at eighteen tried to break in. Ronzo’s putter was red hot from the outset sinking first a 1 metre and then a 5 metre putt over the first two holes. He finished with 14 putts but there was only 10 cms separating him from a final tally of 11 putts and a podium finish. Unfortunately the rest of his game was ice cold, preferring to spend most of it out of the limelight and in the shade of the trees for a 56/41, his one real highlight being a par at fourteen. Dalbs was on a mission to keep 5 putts off his card and he was the big improver, nailing seven 2s and two 1s for 16 putts. This together with a bunch of fairway finders was reflected in his stroke score, consistency through the nine giving him a 50/36. Jacko’s putting also improved over the previous week with six 2s and three 1s for 15. The rest of his game was up and down with a birdie at ten, 3 pars and 3 double bogies for a 43/35.
|
|
|
Not all clear sailing for today's runner-up |
Not his best round but pleased to get a good one away coming home |
Proof positive that the GP NAGA can still sink putts |
Next group out was Squancey, Pinky and Macca, all three with an outside chance of breaking into the GP podium but needing blinders to do it. Macca’s strategy was to sacrifice his stroke score for a shot at the GP but with a 3 putt at the tenth and two more before the end, that soon came unglued and he finished with 19 putts and 59 strokes for a nett 42. Squancey obviously thought Macca was the main threat since he was shadowing him from the outset posting the same number of strokes and putts at the tenth. To his credit, he soon recognised the folly of that approach and started posting a few better scores but another 3 putt at fourteen knocked him out of GP contention and a few more double bogies knocked him out of the running for stroke, although a birdie at the sixteenth made his final result of 49/38 look a little more respectable. Then there was Brian, the outlier in this little group, with no 3 putts and 1 no-putt for 15 putts and a nine hole total of 52/35.
Then came the “real” GP contenders of Litts, Scobes and Walks, although with 17 putts after six holes, it was apparent that one of them was there under false pretences . Walks was not having one of his better days and even two 1 putts to finish still left him with 21 putts and 54/41. The smart money before day 1 was on Litts and Scobes to battle it out for the GP, the only unknown factor being who’s wife would allow that trophy in the house? Litts was cruising and with a no-putt at thirteen he had narrowed the gap from week 1 to just 1 putt but he followed it with a 3 putt 11 at fourteen and two more 3 putts, so even two more 1 putts couldn’t help and he finished with 16 putts and 53/42. Scobes lived up to his reputation as The Silent Assassin, quietly dropping putts all over the course with four 1 putts in a tally of 14 and a round score of 51/35.
Scobes romped home with the Golden Putter, taking just 28 putts over the two nines with next best being Litts on 32. There was some confusion over third place with Jacko on 33 first being given the nod over Pinky on countback, but this was later reversed after closer scrutiny (first reference to Point 2 above). A three-way countback was involved to determine podium positions and Jacko was initially give the chocolates, but this too was reversed after inspection.

Hamersley, Stroke
GOLDEN PUTTER – Round 1
Walks reports . . . It was Round 1 of the Golden Putter played on the Front 9 at Hamersley and the regular competition was a stroke event. The Golden Putter was of the greatest interest to all and sundry.
Golden Putter – Number of Putts on the front nine
The results showed a couple of surprises . . .
Can you believe that Walks had only 13 putts? Apart from putting consistently, he had the uncanny luck to leave at least 5 of his approaches to greens in positions just off the edge of the greens which enabled him to hit non-counting putts into good green positions. And one of his non-counting putts dropped for a birdie.

Great putting from long distances |
Scobes started with a 3 putt but then putted very consistently with a birdie from a non-counting putt from off the green, plus two 1 putts and four 2 putts.
Litts was in good form on most of the greens. He had five 1 putts but was let down by a 3 putt on the 5th hole and a shocker 4 putt on the last.
At the other end of the golden putter results, Dalbs’ round included a 3 putt, a 4 putt and a then a 5 putt on the last hole. He showed great will power to not throw his putter.
Take Note: We are only at the half way mark in this 18 hole event and things can turn around quickly if someone has a day out in Round 2 on the back nine.
Results – Stroke event
As it turned out the four leaders in the Golden Putter happened to be the first four placegetters in the Stroke event. Taking it from the top:
Walks was the winner on the day. His nett 33 was all about his good form at the greens.
There was a three-way countback to decide second and third placegetters. Squancey, Scobes and Litts all finished on nett 35 points.

A very welcome sight – the sheer power of
"Iron Man" opening proceedings |
Bit wobbly early - but still got bogey and 1 putt on the 3rd |
Squancey started cursing early in the round as his drives were erratic, but settled into a consistent game. He had pars on both par 3 holes as well as the ninth hole. He came second on the day.
Scobes continues his run as a podium placegetter. His steady play and excellent putting earnt him third place.
Litts played solidly all day. He is driving very well from the tees and the fairways and his five 1 putt holes put him in good stead but the 4 putt last hole finish cruelled it for him. He finished fourth.
Ronzo and Pinky both finished on nett 36 points.
Ronzo won the countback to finish fifth. It was probably his putting (21 putts) that took the shine off a good round.
Pinky finished sixth.
Macca started very poorly with three triple bogeys but then settled into reasonable golf. He won the NTP and got a par on the fifth hole.
Jacko was a bit off his usual form. He had one par only, and 6 bogeys. He actually played well to get on the greens but his putting was not as good. He only had two 1 putt holes.
Steve joined us and we enjoyed his company. He hasn’t played much golf lately so blew out on a couple of holes. He finished on net 42.
Dalbs was the NAGA on the day with a nett 44. His putting let him down. He had a 3 putt and a 4 putt early in the day and after that, his day did not get much better. He had one par.

Secret Harbour, Stableford
SOUTH OF RIVER – Day 2
Jacko reports . . . Brace yourself for THE SECRET … what do we SEEK people? A golf course with a round, a cart and lunch for 80000 dollars … what did we think people? Well obviously some were more appreciative than others which will become apparent if you can make it to the end of this report - with 9 players at Secret Harbour, there is a lot to get through. It was Week 2 of the SOTR Round and we were in the Deep South. Dramas aplenty pre-game with at times 7, 8 and 9 players on the first tee waiting to start - “the hatless one” (aka Dalbs) flitting between tee and putting green searching in vain for his hat with mint condition GBWGC band, and Walks, who lives “only a short drive away”, employing 'Just In Time' methodology to arrive as the first group was about to tee off (“the last shall be first and the first last” didn't quite pan out in this case, but more on that further down).
|
We're off - straight down the middle |
Squancey, Tom and Pinky led the way on the opening par five with impressive drives but that was apparently the end of “good golf” for the hole and they finished with two 1 pointers and a wipe. Squancey wiped two, four and five but still managed to finish best of the group with 13 aided by a 4 point par at eight. Brian was next best with just one wipe and 12 points while Tom struggled early with four wipes, but closed the nine with two 3 pointers for 9.
Jacko, Scobes and Litts were next, maybe not quite as impressive with opening drives but they managed 6 points between them - Jacko had a three putt 1 point for the second week in succession, so things were looking promising . Jacko scored every hole, including a 3 point NTP at the 436 metre par 5 third (chopped down to 135 metres ) for 19 at the turn. Litts was cruising with 12 points after five holes, but a tight (divided) fairway and a deep bunker saw him wipe two holes before two 3 pointers, including a Long Drive at the ninth, took his tally to 18. Scobes was going head to head with Jacko but one wipe cost him and he took 17 points to the tenth.
|
|
|
Ooops . . . a bit low |
Modesty Macca . . . |
. . . with a lake shot that was a cracker |
The final group of Dalbs, Macca and Walks may or may not have had good drives on the first hole (if they all had great drives and no-one was there to see them, did they really happen?) but they managed 4 points between them. Dalbs started well with 9 points through four holes, but three wipes brought him back to the field with 13 after nine. Macca also had three wipes and his 3 point start was as good it got, managing 12 for the nine. Walks wiped the first (a portent of things to come??), fourth and ninth to post 11 points through nine.
|
Experienced on some holes? |
The back nine was apparently the easier nine or the friendlier nine for those with handicaps greater than 22 since Jacko and Litts were the only ones to post lower scores. The first group obviously hit their straps on this nine, with Squancey and Tom both posting 19 points, Squancey with a 4 point birdie at the par five sixteenth and Tom with an NTP at the par three seventeenth hole over/around the water. Brian added 16 points to his card to finish level with Tom on 28 points.
Jacko fell off the pace a little with bunker trouble giving him a wipe at the par three twelfth after a Long Drive at the par five eleventh, but a birdie at sixteen made up for it and he came in with 17. Scobes posted 17 points on six holes but wipes at three of the holes dealt a blow to his chances of turning around the previous week’s results. Litts obviously prefers nine hole events for a reason – for both SOTR events the back nine has cost him, this week finishing with 11 points for a total of 29.
Dalbs was best of the rest for the nine, obviously thinking less about his hat and more about his golf as he surged to 16 points, assisted by a 3 point par at the last, for a round of 29. Macca had another three wipes but a 4 point par at the tenth was the difference between the two nines and he closed out with 13 for a 25 point total (early ripe …). And then came … Walks. Another three wipes had him standing on the eighteenth tee looking at single figures, but a 3 point par boosted his tally to 11 for a grand total of 22.
|
Only Scobes had an eye for the camera
(not the girls) |
Presentations were done over lunch, an eclectic assortment of tasty vittles (but where were the grits and black-eyed peas?). Podium places went to Jacko with 36, Scobes with 34 and Squancey with 32. After the presentations, Jacko was seen lobbying for an increased number of games in the SOTR round.

Whaleback, Stableford
SOUTH OF RIVER – Day 1
Jacko reports . . . It was the first week of the SOTR round and despite the attempts by a cabal of Northerners to hijack the event, Southern horsesense and hospitality won out and we wound up at Whaleback. It was a first for one of our number and the first in a long time for others, but the man who knows every nook and cranny of the course bowed out citing a conflict of interest (wouldn’t happen in our parliaments) so we ended up with two foursomes. The presidential limousine led the way with Dalbs riding shotgun and Squancey and Jacko on the running boards, and Pinky, Scobes , Macca and the PIW brought up the rear.
The first group covered all of the bases from 0 to 3 on the first hole, but Squancey drew back to square with a birdie at the second while the rest could manage only pars. From there it was a fluctuating front nine for Squancey who made up his own treesome (and some more trees) to get to 17, Dalbs who had the long shots covered in short but getting the short shots close was a long shot, Litts who generally played good shots let down a Little by the approach shots until a 4 point par at the ninth had him level with Dalbs on 19, and Jacko who recovered from his 3 putt at the first to post another 12 for the nine and turn with 21.
The second group was lapping up the course except for Pinky who could manage only 17 (or 15 if he’d scored to his handicap of 32, rather than 34 ) and Macca who wiped the first but then made judicious use of his handicap to post 19. Meanwhile Scobes and Tom were having their own little slugfest, nothing but 2’s and 3’s except for Tom’s 4 pointer at the sixth which proved to be the difference between scores of 22 and 23. Long Drive at the fifth hole was picked up by Tom and NTP at the eighth was snagged by Squancey.
The back nine was more of a challenge for some, Litts and Dalbs in that number, trying to keep those fairways in mint condition by staying right away from them, ending up with 15 and 17 respectively for totals of 34 and 36. Squancey found his mojo although the putting gods were not smiling on him, but he still finished with two bogies for 5 points (or 6 points if he’d claimed his two strokes on the last - mea culpa, always check the numbers a financial consultant feeds you ), for a back nine of 20 points and a total of 36. Jacko exploded from the tenth tee with 16 points after five holes including a birdie and NTP at the signature 13th, but a 1 point fifteenth exposed his mortality before carding another 8 points for 25. In the second group Brian was slipping into the groove, scoring every hole for 19 points and a 36 total, while Macca engaged the turbo, finishing with a 4 point par for 21 and a total of 40. Tom had his first wipe at eleven but made up for it with a 4 point par at thirteen, finishing with 20 points and another Long Drive at sixteen. Scobes was having his first 18 hole walkathon in 10 months but that didn’t stop him picking up two 3s, a 4 and a birdie 5 pointer on his way to 23.

Wembley, Stableford
CHRISTMAS CUP
|
Gathering under the watchful eye of the PIT on the rare occasion he was wearing his hat! |
Litts reports . . ..
Before the Round
It was the Old Course back nine as usual, thanks for booking Macca. Christmas hats were provided by the club based on an Allardice initiative. Well done Ron.
Members were required to pay individually at the counter. No one thought to take a score card with them except for the President and his apprentice who did the honours.
The PIT organised the first group up front and the rest was decided by the usual ball toss. Litts, Tom, Ron and Macca in the first group. Dalbs, Squancy and Pinky in the second group and Jacko, Walks and Scobes in the third and last group.
The Round
This event was the Christmas Cup and there was a sense of anticipation as it is one of the first majors competed for in the history of the club.
The sun was an issue early as it was difficult to pick up ball flight. It was also pretty cool early and the wind was a factor during the entire round. It also appears that the hats may have been an issue for some!
The hat issue didn’t affect Tom however as he had the simplest of solutions. Ron had some thunderous drives and some equally thunderous Nooooooos. Macca played good steady golf particularly early on and always looked as though he would be in contention. Litts had a poor start but played fairly consistently after that.
|
|
We're off! |
|
Squancey hasn’t had a good run recently and today wasn’t any different. Pinky had his first outing after a recharge but it just wasn’t his day. Although there is no record for this, his score of seven must be a club record at least at Wembley. Dalbs had a pretty good round and managed to avoid any wipes along the way.
|
|
|
A bit too wayward today |
Pinky just couldn't stay out of trouble |
|
Home at last |
Jacko had a reasonable round but not up to his usual standard particularly at Wembley. A par on the 15th was the highlight. Walks was travelling pretty well but a wipe on the 17th hurt his chances. Scobes didn’t have a great day but considering where he has come from he wouldn’t have been too worried particularly as it was his birthday.
After the Round
It was off to the Josephs for a post-game breakfast. It was a wonderful spread prepared by Regie and the family and in particular it was great to see Josh and his family there. It was the granddaughter Abby who was the centre of attention and rightly so. Grandma was very very happy and Tom was very very proud but trying not to show it.
|
|
Memorable times |
Great company, hospitality and humour . . . |
|
Hats off to Ronzo and Litts |
The hatbands and caps arrived and the President handed them out. The Captain then did his thing with the presentations and it became apparent that the scores were not what we were used to seeing at Wembley. There was also a common gripe about the design of the score cards. They were terrible. Our form design guys could fix them easily and quickly. The Christmas Cup wasn’t presented to the winner but in any case it’s looking a little sad (broken) and may need something done about it. We missed an opportunity to ask Josh if he had any more building blocks!
The presentation maestro did it again by presenting a framed photo of the Joseph family as a way of thanking them for their hospitality. Thank you Joseph’s all.

Hamersley, Par Bisque
Ronzo reports . . . Another glorious morning weatherwise … no Tom, no Pinky and no Steve, otherwise a full house. Last week someone predicted a Presidential win … this week someone predicted Ron to win his favourite competition, Par Bisque … next week, Tom to win the Christmas Cup!
The highlight of the day (apart from Macca's attempt to put the author off with his shorts ploy) was, after three very good shots down the 14th, the President was in the hole for an Eagle. His third shot from about 160 metres out never looked like missing. (Ron also eagled this hole, back when Adam played fullback for Jerusalem )
|
|
|
Definitely not the Eagle hole |
Cleverly out of trouble |
Another highlight was Macca’s birdie on the 17th … on for one and in for two. Incidentally, another podium finish for Macca.
The third highlight, according to the author, and winner for the day was his maiden win of the season.
To round out this foursome, Walks took the long drive, which was his first of the season … FYI (or not), 12 long drives have been won for the year and two blokes share 10 of them.
The “Other” Foursome … Obviously were there for the hunting! The toll from travelling from “North Bunbury” every week is telling on Squancey. After winning 50% of the first six games, he is off the boil.

|
Long Drive: "Aaaaaaaggghhh . . . pushed it" |
About a four |
Straight down the middle!
Minus 16?? |
CJ was obviously affected by his mate’s form and even wiped four holes. Dennis was asked, on a scale of 1-10, how did Chris play … about a “four” was his respected analytical answer.
When Chris was asked the same question about Dennis’ game, “minus sixteen” was the quick response … little harsh when he was so close to making the podium.
That leaves Sir Robin. Great start with a par, much better than last week and another par on the 16th, but with 50 off the stick that kept him with Scobes on plus two. His thoughts were obviously on coffee, finishing with two sevens.
As mentioned earlier, next week is the Christmas Cup and ALL are advised it is the away shirt AND head gear will be provided … and then on to Tom and Reggie’s for Christmas dinner.

Handicapper's Note: Par Bisque scores are used to determine the main results (including countbacks) such as winners, NAGA and Master’s points. Actual scores are used to update the Eclectic and NTP tables. On the other hand, handicap adjustments and consistency points are based on equivalent Par scores. To achieve this, each card was re-scored on a hole-by-hole basis to give Par results. |

PRESIDENTS TROPHY
Litts reports . . .
|
How did Ronzo know the winner before a ball was struck in anger? |
Intro:
- Beautiful morning and almost perfect conditions on and off the course.
- Walks was a little late due to some confusion over start times. Litts had some cards so we were able to get under way.
- Money changed hands in the carpark in anticipation of the arrival of the hatbands and caps
- Jacko’s 400 game achievement was mentioned at the outset, more on this later.
- Litts teed off first given this was the Presidents Trophy
- This report was written with Jacko in mind. He only reads the dot points apparently!
- Thanks to Dalbs for some valuable input about group 2
Ron:
- Re-discovered some form today after a fairly poor start to the season
- His drives and fairway woods were long and strong
- The short game wasn’t quite as good
- A bit of a fade out on the last two holes which cost him unfortunately
Walks:
- The group reported a classic lucky bounce on the 11th. His 3 wood smacking hard into the big tree which sits on the left of 11th fairway top of rise, careering into the bush, hitting 1 of 3 native grasses and rebounding back onto the fairway. Well done Walks.
- A slow start to his round but came good later on aided by some good lag putting
Dalbs:
- It was a similar story for Bin. He had a slow start but finished strongly. He and Walks both had the same score and a similar round profile
- A par and a bogie on the 14th and 15th were highlights
|
Launching today's NTP |
Macca
- He was a bit hit and miss (Robins words!) but hit some great shots (one his NTP on the 16th) and as always his putting was solid
- Left handed club chuck was noted on the 17th
Squancey:
- It was a noisy round by Squancey. The reason is obvious, not one of his best. Had a bad one, vented and got on with it.
- It was a promising start with a par on the 10th but after that it went south
Jacko:
- Not one of his best. Scoring was ok but he wasn’t happy with the way he was hitting the ball
- He discovered some form on the last hole as he remembered what he had been doing wrong during the round. It turns out it was that right shoulder.
Litts:
- Wiped the first hole and hit a wrong ball on the 15th. Some things went well others didn’t.

Our perfect hostess (the one
on
the right) |
Won his own trophy
Conclusion:
- Litts won on a countback from Ron and had the added pleasure of being given the trophy on the day. Apparently Denno wanted the trophy bought along and presented. It was good omen for the author
- NTP didn’t go off on the first attempt. More success at the 16th
- Dalbs did his usual thing and presented Jacko with his 400 game certificate and a record of his time at the club. Well done Dalbs and Jacko of course.
- Ron and Marg continued to supply the breakfast vitals. Thanks to you both.

MATCH PLAY, Rd 2
Walks reports . . . 7 players fronted up with
one Match Play on the day between Dalbs and Macca.
Matchplay - Dalbs versus Macca
|
|
Battle at the Black Stump |
Dalbs was steady from the outset while Macca was rubbish early. After 6 holes Dalbs was +3 and Macca seemed to be gone for all money. But then Dalbs got a bit sloppy and could not stay on his own fairway and Macca found form with a 3 pointer on the 7th hole and then a 4 pointer par on the 8th hole. Going into the last hole Dalbs was up +1 but he had to give Macca a stroke. It was a very tight affair. Both got on the green with 5 strokes each. Both were 2-3 metres from the hole and Macca had to putt first. A good putt by Macca lipped the cup but did not fall. He then dropped it in. It was then up to Dalbs. If he could sink it, he would win. Otherwise a countback and a win to Macca was likely. But Cool Hand Dalbs played the shot of the day and sank his putt and won the match with a +1 scoreline. (Gotta admire Macca - has the stickability to fight back after frustrating starts as he recently showed at the Binningup Open. Ed.)
Stableford Comp
Scores ranged from 16 to 20 points.
|
|
Ronzo had his challenges . . . |
. . . but showed resolve with his return shot to the 14th fairway |
Macca was the lowest scorer and NAGA with 16 points. Wiped the first 2 holes but then played steady golf thereafter.
Squancey and Jacko, our 2 low handicappers, scored a respectable 17 points each. Both wiped the par4 13th hole. Squancey was not a happy chappy after duffing 3 shots in a row, but to his credit he bounced back with a couple of pars. Jacko was his usual resilient self and managed to score on every other hole.
Dalbs withstood the matchplay pressure on the day and ended up with a creditable 18 points. He finished fourth.
Ronzo finished third. He also had 18 points but beat Dalbs on count back. Ronzo showed flashes of great form. He scored 16 points on 5 holes. He also had two wipes and two 1 pointers.
Deno finished second with 19 points. Scored points on every hole and had three 3 pointers.
Walks won the day with 20 points. He drove consistently and his putting was better than usual. Had 2 pars and 4 bogeys.

Hamersley, Par
Jacko reports . . . Back to Hamersley after the Binningup Open, expecting 8 players with Litts having “other things to do” but a ninth suddenly materialised – Tom couldn’t sleep. It was that game that everybody loves to hate – Par – and there was some last minute coaching on the intricacies of scoring while all were gathered on the 10th tee. After a somewhat feeble attempt at a ball toss, the groups were seemingly arbitrarily assigned (but it was probably glaringly obvious in the dark recesses of Walks’ mind). With a gusting easterly threatening to relocate the new earthworks and pro-shop seatainers on the western side of Marmion Ave, the first group hit the tee.
Scobes, Squancey and Jacko must have pulled the cone of silence down early because despite the numerous shots which “missed by THAT much” and the frequent and varied pleas for inter-course activity, the following groups remarked that they hadn’t heard Squancey. Suffice to say his minus 4 was not one of his finest rounds but even he was struck dumb on the fifteenth when, after putting a 30 metre pitch and run 20 metres over the back of the green, he knocked a 35 metre return chip into the hole for par J. Scobes started in usual style, playing himself in with 3 halves to open, but 2 wipes were a setback from which he never really recovered and he closed with minus 2. Jacko gave the rough a hammering through the first two holes, wiping both without a putt, but recovered to finish with plus 1, helped by a birdie at 16 and a controversial Long Drive.
|
|
Need a hand mate? |
|
The next group of Macca, Tom and Ronzo were mirroring the (mis)fortunes of the group in front. Tom had two pars in his first three holes and two in the last three, but three wipes kept him to plus 1. Ronzo started with two wipes, recovering to square after four, but oscillated between square and minus 1 to finish with just that. Macca spent most of his remaining good shots for 2023 at Bunbury, and after an opening teaser of a plus it was all downhill to minus 4. This group also provided a glaring example of the perils of having three groups of GBWGC players – the aforementioned controversial Long Drive. In a senior’s moment (or a brain fade?), one unnamed player drove his cart down to see who’s name was on the flag, then pulled the flag and took it to the 18th green - Jacko prefers to think he realised that nobody else could possibly best his mammoth drive.
The final group of Pinky, Walks and Dalbs fared the best as a group but couldn’t break away from the pack. Brian hit two great drives and an NTP but apparently little else, posting just one plus on his way to minus 3. Dalbs and Walks were having a much closer tussle, both having three pluses and both returning plus 1, with a countback having to go back to the fourteenth to separate them. Walks could have been a contender for Long Drive which was settled using the tried and true fisherman’s method – mine was THAT long.

MELBOURNE CUP
Walks reports . . . Eight players turned out to play for the Melbourne Cup trophy. Weather was perfect and the course was in good nick, although some greens were still slow paced because of recent coring and sanding.
Jacko started the round with a par but his game then fell away. He wiped both par 5s and only managed two bogeys. Finished on 11 points and was NAGA.
Litts is struggling to find his old form. He had no pars, only 3 bogeys and 2 wipes to finish on 12 points.
Macca has had great success with new driver recently. However, it was a different story on Tuesday. His drives sprayed everywhere. He was then forced to play recovery shots. No pars and only 2 bogeys left him with 13 points overall.

The drives that went astray . . .
. . . |
. . . and the bewdy that didn't |
Pinky scored points on every hole but unfortunately 5 of the holes were I pointers. Finished well with a 3 point bogey on the last hole. Scored 14 points.
Squancey seems to be handling his tough 8 handicap. He had three pars along the way, and finished the round with 16 points.
Ronzo started poorly, getting only I point after two holes. But he then found his groove. He got a 3 point par on the par 3 twelfth and then followed on with five 3 point bogeys in succession. It was his best performance this season. Finished the round with 21 points.
Dalbs started with a par on the first hole and played consistently throughout the round. With another par on the fourteenth plus 4 bogeys, he finished the round with 21 points.
Walks was strong out of the blocks. His drives were great but he was a bit scratchy around the greens. Missed a 1 metre putt for par on the first and fluffed a short pitch shot on the second but still had 5 points after 2 holes. He then parred the next 2 holes to give him 12 points after 4 holes. A wipe followed but he then finished off with 3 bogeys to end up with the winning score of 22 points.
It just so happens that he won the Melbourne Cup trophy last year and he has now done it again.

MATCH PLAY – Round 1
Walks reports . . . It was our first look at the Hamersley redevelopment, the most noticeable change being a flat sandy plain where the clubhouse once stood. Practice facilities are now hidden behind copious lines of fencing and the transportables were proving a workable interim solution.

Phoenix about to rise |
But in the meantime . . . |
There were 9 starters on the day, the largest number of starters so far this season.

Match Play results
Macca v Walks
Walks got one up early when Macca wiped the 11th hole and then Walks should have claimed the next hole but left his one metre putt hanging over the hole but refusing to drop. Macca dropped in a putt from two metres and halved the hole. He then played very consistently and won the next three holes. Walks got one back on the 17th and both realised that if Walks won the 18th, he would win the day on a countback. The pressure was on. Walks looked good after 2 drives that put him within 40 metres of the green, with Macca 100 metres behind. However, Macca drove to the green and Walks fluffed a chip. The hole was tied and the end result was a 1 up victory to Macca.
Dalbs v Litts
Litts started out in a consistent groove while Dalbs majored in loose shots and was immediately 2 down after 3 holes. Litts’s game then started to stutter. He started having trouble with approach shots and conceded a few holes as a consequence, while Dalbs lifted his rating and played some steady golf. Dalbs won the day with a 2 and 1 victory.
Jacko v Ronzo
Jacko is always hard to beat because of his consistency (and skill), and on this day he ploughed through to be 5 up after six holes. Ronzo played a couple of good holes after the result was already determined. Jacko won the day with a 5 and 3 victory.
Dennis v Squancey
Dennis may not have had great expectations as he commenced his comeback game but his play was not too shabby. Squancey, on the other hand, was not able to maintain his great form of late, as he let Dennis get 2 up after 2 holes. Squancey won the third hole but was inconsistent from then on. Dennis won the eighth hole and that gave him a 2 and 1 victory.

Stableford Event
The Stableford event was a sideshow to the Match Play contests. Scores ranged from 11 to 19 points.
Squancey was NAGA on the day with only 11 points. Perhaps he is looking to reset his handicap for upcoming Binningup.
Ron finished on 12 points and was pleased that he was not last.
Dennis finished sixth with 14 points which was quite an acceptable score for his comeback.
Dalbs finished fifth with 17 points
Jacko finished fourth with 18 points.
And on the podium, there were three players who all finished on 19 points. After prolonged scrutiny of the countback holes, the final placings were:
1st: Walks (19 pts) . . . on countback from
2nd: Macca (19) . . . and
3rd: Pinky (19)

Peninsula, Stableford
ROBIN DALBY (not the) SEA VIEW CHAMPIONSHIP
Squancey reports . . . Dalbs had advised us that it was not possible to play this annual advent at Cottesloe so an alternative course was needed. We ended up at Maylands Peninsular. With a later than usual start time, 6 players – Macca, Jacko, Litts, Dalbs Ronzo and Squancey – were eager to hit the course.
|
There Squancey, take THAT! |
The 1st group of Squancey, Jacko and Macca were invited to tee off, resulting in 3 great drives down the centre of the 10th fairway. Macca boasting that he out driven Squancey and Squancey having second thoughts about selling his driver to Macca. Squancey was sure that the money he got from Macca was just a deposit and Macca should cough up the rest! Second shots ended with Macca and Jacko just short of the green with Squancey short and right of the green. Squancey had a 7-iron punch shot rolling short of the green, 2 putted for a 5. Macca and Jacko were punished by the speed of the green, their 2nd shots rolling through the green with Jacko taking 3 putts to sink the ball and Macca with 4 putts. The 11th was a similar story. Macca and Jacko hit good drives down the centre, with Squancey’s drive drifting right off the fairway. Macca’s second shot went through the green again and he 3 putted for a 3 pointer. Jacko’s second shot fell short of the green, his 3rd shot rolled almost to the other side of the green and he took 3 putts to sink it. Squancey hit a perfect 5-iron punch shot from under the trees, landing short of the green and rolling through the green. He missed a one-foot putt for par ending with 5 shots to sink the ball. Was there a pattern forming here?
Yes, there was. Jacko hooked his ball into the lake, Squancey and Macca drove their ball down the centre. Jacko had a good recovery 3rd shot while the wheels started to fall off for Macca. Macca wiped the hole and Jacko took another 3 shots to sink the ball. Squancey's 2nd shot landed under some tree, right and short of the green. He punched a 5-iron out, chipped on the green with a 7-iron and sank a long putt for 5 again. For Chris the damage was done in the first 3 holes, only picking up 3 points. He recovered by scoring pars on both par threes, had another 1 pointer and played to his handicap for the remainder.
Macca, like Jacko, had issues with the first half of the course but came home strongly playing to his handicap or better.
Squancey had one of those days. Drove brilliantly, some drifting to the right; hitting great recovery shots. Putted to perfection, sinking long putts. Tore the course apart with a stunning performance, striking each ball with exquisite technique. He played to his handicap or better with 2 pars and a birdie on the 17th. The drive on the 17th was just off the fairway about 150 meters out. A 4- iron recovery club punched the ball, landing short of the green and then rolling about 15 feet past the pin. Another long putt found its way into the hole.
|
|
|
On track . . . Off track |
Did I just hit that straight? |
The second group looked like they were having issues. Looking back on them, they were scrub bashing on a number of holes. Ronzo looked like he picked up from last week, only scoring 6 points on the 1st 6 holes. He came home strongly with 9 points on the last 3 holes. An impressive par on the 17th picking up 4 points put some respectability into his score.Dalbs was consistent with his last week’s score. Up and down round. Three wipes do not help. Scoring a par on the par 5, 14th, picking 4 points kept him from competing for NAGA. Litts started off well, playing to handicap for the 1st 4 holes. Three one pointers and a wipe did not help his cause. We think that throwing out the anchor is manipulating his handicap in preparation for the Binningup Open.

SPRING CLASSIC
Jacko reports . . . It was the first major for the season, the Spring Classic at Wembley, on a course which traditionally yields high scores and everyone was pumped. The ball toss is usually a mysterious and hotly contested process and this one didn’t disappoint. Between Jacko racing off to change into a pair of shoes he hadn’t brought, and Walks trying to make up a 3 and a 4 out of six players, it’s a wonder we ever made it off the tenth tee of the Old Course. However, on one of those perfect spring mornings that scream “get out on the golf course”, the group of Walks, Dalbs and Litts finally did, followed by Ronzo, Squancey and Jacko.

Trees . . . and sand! |
It didn’t take long to dash any hopes that Walks might have harboured, opening with two 1 pointers. His pre-game prayers for a bunch of “threes” apparently fell on (slightly) deaf ears, instead collecting a large number of “trees” in his total of 10 points. Litts didn’t fare much better, with just 1 point after 2 holes, also failing to card a 3 pointer on his way to 12 points. Dalbs was the lone shining beacon in the group, starting with a 3 point bogey but wipes at eleven and fourteen took a little of the sheen off his score of 17.
Ronzo was out of the blocks early, turning a scuffed drive off the first tee into a 3 point bogey, and with 11 points after 5 holes was finally heading towards a winning score. Or so he thought … until three wipes had him re-thinking his short term goals, finishing with 13 points. Squancey was looking like slugging it out with Walks and Litts with just 1 point after 2 holes, but his usual game clicked in and three pars plus a Long Drive on seventeen helped him to 16 points.

Pitcher perfect (Pitch . . . . . . . . and a putt . . . . . . . . easy!) |
A winning backhander |
Jacko had four “1 putt greens” in his round but it was the three “3 putt greens” which were threatening to deny him his second podium finish. The rest of his game was keeping him in it though, and despite a wipe on fifteen, he walked off eighteen with 19 points.
Macca joined us for coffee, Ronzo’s biscuits and presentations at the golf course – a first for this season.

Hamersley, Stableford
Squancey reports . . .Another fine day for golf with 7 turning up and eager to hit the course. This was to be the first week that the Pro Shop was to move into the temporary accommodation while the upgrades commence. Yes, they had moved but they were not organised. The gates were to be opened at 5.30am and we should have been teeing off at 5.45am.
The first group, Walks, Pinky and Squancey teed off around 5.50am, all with great drives, landing about 80 meters short of the green. On their second shot, Pinky was the only one who managed to put the ball on the green. Walks got caught up in the trees on the left hand side, sinking the ball for a score of 6. Pinky missed his 5 foot birdie chance, but still managed to pick up 4 stableford points. Squancey chipped on and 2 putted for 2 stableford points. Squancey continued where he left off from last week playing consistent golf. Missed a 6-foot putt on the 11th for a birdie, ending up with par. Parred the 12th where he won the nearest to the pin. Parred the 15th and the 17th and played to his handicap on the remainder of the hole. No wipe and no 1 pointers, ending up with 23 stableford points.
|
Another draw into the green |
There must have been something in the air as the boys from the south took all spots on the podium. There was a large explosion at a chemical factory at Bibra Lake. What had they inhaled? Jacko, on the same handicap as Squancey, played a similar round of golf. He made par on the 10th and 11th and the 17th. Played to his handicap on the 13th through to 16th with his only blemish being 5 strokes on the par 3 12th. Jacko ended up with 21 points and also picked up the longest drive on the 18th hole. Pinky started off on fire, hitting long drives down the middle of the fairways and scoring 11 points on the 1st 4 holes. A couple of wayward shots on the next 2 holes was his undoing, only picking up 1 point on each of them. The next 2 holes he played to his handicap and on the final hole he picked up a 3 pointer, ending up with a total of 20 stableford points.
Walks was all over the shop, hitting long drives down the fairway and spraying other shots. His 1 wipe and 3 one pointers made it difficult to accumulate a good score. It was not a complete disaster as Walks managed to pick up 2 three pointers ending up with a total of 15 stableford points.
The final Group made up of Dalbs, Chris, Litts and Ronzo must have thought after the first hole that this game of golf is easy as 3 of them parred the 10th hole. Apparently, Ronzo's 7 strokes on the 10th was to be the norm for the rest of his round of golf. The first group thought that there must have been an issue as we never saw the second group again until we were on the 18th along side of the 16th where they were putting on the green. Dalbs started off and finished off well, picking up 7 points on the 1st 3 holes and 9 points on the last 3 holes. It was the 13th to the 15th that was his downfall where he managed only 2 points. Dalbs still managed to play to his handicap and, with a total of 18 stableford points, came 4th on a count back with Litts.

Struggling with the diabolicals |
Enjoying consistency off the tee |
Litts started off well scoring 8 points on the 1st 3 holes. A wipe on the 15th and 1 pointers on the 13th and 17th put a dent in his score. He was pretty consistent off the tee and his short game was on fire with pars on the both par 3’s and ending up with 3 pars off the stick. He would have to be happy with that. Ronzo, what can one say. It can only get better unless you are throwing out the anchor to increase your handicap for Binningup. I can teach you some phrases to vent your frustration!
Macca and Jeannie were again the hosts for a relaxing breakfast and the podium presentations . . . |

Hamersley, Par
Squancey reports . . . Everyone was early with the starting time being the topic of conversations for the prior 5 days. Initial starting time was after 6.00am with the revised time starting at first 5.30am and revised to 5.45am. The only issue was that Hamersley management did not fulfill their obligation so we teed off at a time closer to 6.00am.
Squancey, Walks, Brian and Litts teed off first as Ronzo and Dalbs were still sorting out the golf cart. It looked like it could be a good day for golf as Brian and Walks parred the hole scoring a “+” score; Squancey had a birdie after sinking a 20 foot putt; Litts was the only failure but not before he gave all a quick class on how to score PAR golf (which Ronzo closely noted!).
|
|
In the clear |
Eventually in the clear |
Squancey played some up and down golf picking up 4 “+”, 3 squares and 2 “-“. He managed to be on or just off the fairway on all drives and picked up the long drive on the final hole. The shot that caused him the most problem was 40 to 50 foot chip shots which he hit skinny knocking over the back of the greens on a number of occasions. Net score of plus 2.
Ronzo was having an average came of golf until the 8th hole where he made good use of his 2 stroke handicap picking up a “+”. He repeated this achievement on the 9th also. Ronzo managed 2 “+”, 2 ”-“ and squared 5 holes. Net score of square.
Macca, 3rd on the podium, did not make full use of his 16 stroke handicap with scoring 2 “+”, squaring 4 holes and having a negative score on 3 holes. His highlight was having a par off the stick on the par 3 12th hole. Net score of negative 1.

|
What!! A putter from off the green? |
Getting back on track |
The remainder were struggling. Litts, Brian, Jacko and Walks all ending up with a negative 2 score, while Dalbs had a dismal negative 4. On count back, Litts came in 4th followed by Brian, Jacko and Walks. Litts’s highlight was a par off the stick on the par 5 11th hole on which Jacko went one better with a birdie on the same whole after sinking a looonngg putt from off the green. Walks started off strongly with a par off the stick on the 10th. Finished strongly with 5 strokes on the hardest hole, the 18th, but there was not much in between. Jacko had a good start with squaring the 10th, picking up a plus for the 11th and 12th, then he fell into a hole, picking up 4 “-“, and squaring 2 holes. Dalbs would like to remove this game from his memory so I will not give you a blow by blow description of it, but to say, hang in there Dalbs.

Breakfast at Spinifex was highlighted by the presentation to Squancey of his 300-game Certificate and his club Heritage Medal. His Heritage number 13 has much going for it despite the generally accepted view of this number . . .
Heritage Number 13
He had quite a morning, including a birdie and the Long Drive!

Hamersley, Stroke
The Little One reports . . .
It was a beautiful morning with near perfect conditions for golf. It was the author’s first game for the season and he was impressed by the condition of the fairways and greens plus the new hole markers. The tees weren’t up to scratch but something was going on there as they were set back as far as possible and there were workers lurking. It wasn’t ideal for the short hitters but that’s another story.
The start was delayed a little for a very important presentation to Squancey who achieved the 300-game milestone. Congrats Squancey (Read all about it).
We had eight players this morning and the carting duo of Ronzo and Dalbs were joined by Macca and Squancey to lead off in the first group. Messrs Walker, Pink, Jackson and Little followed up. The rounds were relatively uneventful except for the usual problems on the 11th hole trying to see where shots ended up.
Ronzo finished off last season in sizzling form getting his handicap down to 10 at one stage and settling on 11 by season end. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to reproduce that form this year and has found himself at or near the rear end of the pack in the first two rounds of the year. He’s looking forward to next week’s par event!
Walks had an up and down day. His driving wasn’t up to his usual standard and it got him into trouble on occasion. Despite that he had some good holes with a couple of pars and some near misses.
Squancey didn’t get off to the best of starts but turned it around quickly with a birdie on the 12th. He had the NTP all but sewn up (more on this later) and sank a nice putt to get his birdie, a first for the club this year.

Trouble in the camp |
Driven into trouble |
First season birdie! |
Dalbs had a decent round that was let down by a couple of triple bogies on the 12th and 13th holes. On the brighter side the rest of the round was very competitive and he finished it off with a par on the difficult 18th.
Jacko played to his handicap today and took out both the NTP and LD awards. Unfortunately, he had a bad start including hitting a wrong ball on the 10th fairway. Despite that he recovered well and played some good golf including two pars.
Macca, Pinky and Litts filled out the podium. Macca had a very consistent round and finished in third place due only to countback. His good form from last week continued into this week. Pinky also continued his good form from last week. There were no pars but he was always around the mark. We get the impression his handicap will continue to come down over the coming season. The new set of clubs seem to be working for him. Litts had his best round for the season including sinking a couple of putts that put him in the running.

|
Low but straight |
Heading home under the watchful eye |
The NTP (referred to above) was a very tight affair this week. As reported Squancey had a very nice approach to the 12th. Jacko also hit a very nice approach off the tee and at first glance the ball and the existing maker were equidistant from the hole. Visually no one was prepared to make the call so the flag stick we used to measure the distance. There were three referees watching closely and they ordered a remeasure after the first attempt was inconclusive. The result was finally declared and Jacko won the day.
|
|
|
We were met at the 18th green by a welcome sight – the familiar figure of Scobes who, but for a sore back, might have joined us today. |
|
We then retired to Spinifex on West Coast Drive for breakfast. The food and company were fantastic and a great step up from the usual post-game celebrations except of course for last week’s breakfast at the McLennans. Spinifex is on the cards for next week as well. |
All members now have new bag tags so we are expecting them to be on show, on the bags, as from next week’s game.

SEASON OPENER
|
We're off! |
The Mandurah Monster reports . . . Seven starters for the opening round of the Summer season. Weather was pleasant and course was in great shape. Jacko, Squancey and Walks led the way, followed by Pinky and Macca chasing Ron and Dalbs in a motorised cart.
Low handicapper, Jacko, was (very) slow out of the blocks, and only managed one par and 4 bogeys. Finished with 13 points and was the NAGA. Expect much better next week.
Ron was somewhat errant off the tee except for the odd ripper drive. Had to contend with numerous trees as a result of the wayward drives. However, he putted in spectacular fashion with an amazing 4 putts in the first five holes (resulting from a 20+ metre putt from off the green). Only three Agghhs for the round! Net result of 14 points and came sixth.
Squancey finished fifth on 16 points. Didn’t manage a par all day but had 5 bogeys. A couple of wipes in the middle of his round cruelled it for him.
Dalbs finished fourth on 17 points. Also didn’t manage a par all day and had 5 bogeys, but no wipes. He followed his cart captain with some good putts.
And on the podium:
There was a countback for second with Pinky and Macca both finishing on 19 points. Pinky was using his new clubs and was getting extra length on his drives (the Callaway Epic Driver), however putting continued to stop him from reaching an excellent score. Pretty much the same story for Macca. He also hit some excellent drives but putting let him down. In the end lucky Macca finished one up over the last three holes to take second place. Walks was the winner on the day.
After only 5 holes he had 3 pars and 14 points. Carried on to make a huge 21 points.
And after the round:
|
|
A quick phone call home from Macca and Wonder Woman Jeannie had a feast on the table while the barista pumped out great coffees. An unexpected but greatly appreciated end to the Season Opener. |
